I’m pretty active over on Instagram (come follow me!) so once a month I’m sharing with you the work I feel most excited about!
I’ve made no secret of the fact that I’m not very much into watersoluble media. I’m a total acrylics lover yo. However, with the summer approaching and generally being out of the house more, I really felt I should have a proper try at watercolours. They’re much more portable, less messy and I should be able to take them on the plane no problem (going to Greece this weekend!).
I’m using a lovely Schmincke set based on a colour palette put together by the effervescent Jane Davenport.
Firstly let me say: holy shit batman, ARTIST QUALITY WATERCOLOURS! Such a big difference to cheaper ones in terms of how they mix with water, how it feels to apply them to the page and the vibrancy of the colours. I feel a bit torn saying this, because I do love encouraging you to use what you can afford and not let supplies be a barrier to entry. But anyway you could always drop subtle hints that a small set of these would be the perfect thing for an upcoming birthday or Christmas….
Full disclosure: I haven’t really got a clue how to use watercolours. I don’t know the techniques. But I did figure it was probably just adding water.. right? I’ve found it challenging, but also fun! It’s not about blending things to buggery like you do with acrylics.
- Use water brushes like Pentel Aquabrush
- Use a small spray bottle with water to spray directly onto the palette
- Work in a watercolour journal. I’m using Stillman & Birn Zeta series
- Work anywhere! It’s super portable
So, my first forays into using watercolours, let me show you them!
Have you used watercolours? What do you think of them? Be sure to let me know in the comments!
