Tell us in one sentence what it is you do?

I champion the Inner Artist.

What is your favourite colour palette?

Cobalt Teal, Green Gold, Quinacrodone Magenta.

What is your (current) favourite art supply?

Acrylics paint!

When I think of you, the word authentic immediately comes to mind. What does authenticity mean to you in your life and art?

Authenticity, to me, means being real about your stuff – the good stuff and the shadow stuff. It means being in the world in a way that doesn’t obscure the reality of your life or yourself. In art, it means exploring your own inner landscape, using symbols and visual language that is specific to you, and following every impulse, no matter how wild.

Interview with Jeanette Montero – Radiant Art Journals Teacher Interviews

Let me present to you an interview with the wonderful Jeanette Montero!

radiantjeanette

Tell us in one sentence what it is you do?

I am a mixed media artist and art supply junkie.

What is your favourite colour palette?

Warm colors – red-orange-yellow

What is your (current) favourite art supply?

That’s a tough question for an art supply junkie but overall I’d have to say the one art supply I can’t give up is gesso. It’s a base coat, a glue, a paint color, and an eraser all in one… it’s like magic!

For your Sketchbook Project you drew & painted giraffes inspired by your favourite artists. Tell us a bit more about what inspired this project, how you approached it and what you learned?

The inspiration for the project was that I wanted to discover “my style” and I wanted to start by learning and experimenting with the techniques of my favorite artists. I love painting animals but I wanted a cohesive sketchbook, so I decided to limit it to one of my favorites, the giraffe. It turned out to be the best decision. Having to incorporate the giraffe into every piece of art work actually forced me to find more creative ways to present the techniques and styles I was learning.

I am not sure that I have truly found my style because I so enjoy playing around with different materials and techniques but what I did learn from this project was that I do not have the patience for rendering lifelike drawings or paintings! I love using more simple, less detailed forms of animals and plants in my work. More importantly, this project set me on my path as a mixed media artist because I discovered that I no longer felt the need or the pressure to limit myself to learning, mastering or using one medium at a time. If you haven’t tried working in a series, I highly recommend that every artist do so. You can learn so much by getting so intimate and studying just one subject so thoroughly.

What new exciting thing is coming next in the world of Jeanette Montero?

For starters, I am very excited (and honored) to be guest teaching with you and 15 other talented artists in the 2nd edition of Effy’s Radiant E-course and engaging with the artists who will be joining us in the class. My hope is to inspire others to pick up any art supply from the humble crayon to the more complicated or intimidating encaustic paints and just feel free to play. I am launching my website and I plan on sharing all my experiments there and hopefully there will be new online classes in the future as well.

Interview with Wyanne – Radiant Art Journals Teacher Interviews

Let me present to you an interview with the wonderful Wyanne Thompson!

radiantwyanne

Tell us in one sentence what it is you do?

I am a bad ass survivor of the “Big C”, who creates imaginative art to warm hearts and create smiles.

What is your favourite colour palette?

I don’t have a favorite….I tend to change it all the time. I’m a Pisces, after all.

What is your (current) favourite art supply?

Coffee…but that’s not a traditional art supply. I’d have to say Pebeo Colorex Brilliant Watercolour. It’s a liquid watercolor with lots of color punch. That will probably change tomorrow…or even in the next hour.

You’ve had a super intense last few years, being diagnosed with and then recovering from oral cancer. How has this experience influenced your art?

It has influenced everything! Especially my art. I realized how much time I was wasting before the “Big C” (I never say the actual word as to lend too much power to the disease). I worried too much about a painting or an idea, or I questioned it. I’ve learned life is way too short…just do it. Make the art. Don’t worry about if it’s good enough, the how to’s, the techniques, if people will like it….or even if you will like it. The magic is in the process of creating of it…that’s the part to truly relish.

Specifically from the point of view of being an artist, is there any advice or wisdom you would impart for people who a going through or recovering from a serious illness?

First and foremost….don’t give up…ever!!! No matter the situation…always try to create something. There were times that I was too weak and sick to do anything. I managed to somehow make splotches of watercolor on paper. It was too much work to try and make “something”. But I could paint the splotches and simply enjoy the paint hitting the paper and the colors. Too often we think that it’s the finished product that is healing…but it’s really just the process of doing the art itself that really heals.

What new exciting thing is coming next in the world of Wyanne?

Huge…I mean HUGE paintings on wood. The smallest is 36″ X 36″ and the largest is 48″ X 60″.

Interview (+ a giveaway!) with Kelly Hoernig – Radiant Art Journals Teacher Interviews

Let me present to you an interview with the wonderful Kelly Hoernig! Be sure to read all the way to the end so you can enter Kelly’s awesome GIVEAWAY!

radiantkelly

Tell us in one sentence what it is you do?

I am a full time artist who finds creativity in art, writing, photography and living.

What is your favourite colour palette?

I love earth tones with a touch of green added in. Think of a woodland floor full of fall leaves, twigs, dirt and moss, that would be my palette.

What is your (current) favourite art supply?

At the moment I am loving stencils. They are just such a fun and easy way to add texture and interest without a lot of work. Not to mention the huge variety they offer is incredible.

Nature is an important part of your work. How do you connect with nature and incorporate it into your work?

I live in the country on 10 acres and am surrounded by the look, sound and feel of it. I don’t necessarily go out of my way to incorporate it, it just shows up in everything. If I am doing mixed media, I like old postage stamps and most of them have birds, butterflies, insects or are full of earth tones. When looking for something to add, a twig, leaf or piece of bark may find its way into the composition. Butterflies are a great way to add color and variety to my work so a field guide is always close by. I guess you can say I do what I am and that is surrounded by Mother Nature.

What new exciting thing is coming next in the world of Kelly Hoernig?

My latest book Colored Pencil Collage by Northlight is due out in August. It celebrates my love of mixed media texture with the main component being done in colored pencil.

I am also working on a Steampunk Tunnel Book e-course for September. It will be done in acrylics, colored pencil, pen and ink.

Interview with Felicia Borges – Radiant Art Journals Teacher Interviews

Let me present to you an interview with the wonderful Felicia Borges!

radiantfelicia

Tell us in one sentence what it is you do?

As the creator of the ART JOURNAL REBELLION, I inspire fellow artists to embrace a “There are no rules!” approach and to challenge their perceptions and the status quo.

What is your favourite colour palette?

As an artist that is inspired by street art, graffiti, and many forms of art from around the world, my color palette is pretty bright, bold, and eclectic.

What is your (current) favourite art supply?

I am an instant gratification girl and like working with my fingers. Therefore, Uni Posca paint pens are something I reach for on a regular basis. Rarely do I create an art journal page without them being used in some way. But I wouldn’t encourage others to run out and buy a set of Uni Posca paint pens. If you want to try them, just get one or two. If you like them, get one or two more. I also hate watching paint dry so I can’t live without my heat gun. Other than that it’s mixed media for me, baby! (Translation: I can do whatever I want and change my mind frequently.)

One of the biggest mistakes I made as a new art journaler was to rush out and buy sets of everything that I saw others talking about on FB, demonstrating on YouTube, etc. I have found that rarely do I need the whole set (How many shades of yellow do you need? Really?!?!). More often than not, I get bored with an art supply, decide it’s not for me, and move on to something else. Use up what you’ve got! And when you need more or want to try something new, just get a small amount (art supply stores sell singles of most brands). You don’t need the full set!

What does your motto ‘there are no rules’ mean to you and what do you think it can do for people who are also into art journaling?

Back in 2010, when I first started art journaling and began connecting with the online art journal community as a whole, I found myself saying “Hey! Hold on! Wait a minute! There are no rules!” as a response to so many questions and comments that were being made by fellow artists. There are a lot of preconceived notions about art, art journaling, who is an artist, what is art, what is “good” art, what supplies “should” be used and the “best” way to use them, etc. Says who?!?!

My motto, “There are no rules!” is a constant reminder to me (and to others) to question everything, including our own preconceived notions and self-limiting beliefs, and the silly made-up and completely irrelevant “rules” that we impose on ourselves and others. In 2015 I created the “Art Journal Rebellion” (through my Facebook page) and now regularly post (rant?) about these concepts. I also post challenges to the status quo, inspirational food for thought, etc. Most recently I’ve been encouraging folks to make the transition from my Facebook page over to the “Art Journal Rebellion” Facebook group. This is bigger than me and it is my sincere hope that the group will continue to grow and evolve. You can find it here:

What new exciting thing is coming next in the world of Felicia Borges?

I am excited to be making my online teaching debut in “Radiant II: Art Journals” hosted by the one and only Ms. Effy Wild. Online teaching is something I’ve been wanting to do for a while now. The technology side of it just hasn’t been something I was super motivated to learn about. But so far (at least with “Radiant II: Art Journals”) the tech side hasn’t been as awful as I thought it would be and I’m now eager to challenge my self-limiting belief and branch out on my own and try it. I’ve created a face-to-face Meetup for the ART JOURNAL REBELLION in Northern California and I am excited to get going on that. Imagine raucous head-to-head art journaling challenges, relay races, speed art journaling, etc. (This ain’t your momma’s art journaling!). My “Kiln Formed Graffiti Glass” is also starting to pop up in local galleries in Northern California. I am just getting started, people!

Interview with Juna Biagioni – Radiant Art Journals Teacher Interviews

Let me present to you an interview with the wonderful Juna Biagioni!

radiantjuna

Tell us in one sentence what it is you do?

I like to call myself a mixed media artist & explorer: my main focuses are mixed media, art journaling and monoprinting, and I also love to paint and draw faces.

What is your favourite colour palette?

It varies. I often like to use a more muted colour scheme, but for my monoprints I mostly use bright colours.

What is your (current) favourite art supply?

At the moment I love to work with soft pastels. It’s such a direct medium: just pigment contained in a little binder. You don’t have to let anything dry, or mix it up, or use any tools. It’s very opaque, so perfect for layering. And you can create great texture with it as well!

What is the significance of painting/drawing faces for you?

It’s huge! Currently all I do is creating faces. I make them in my art journals and also as separate paintings and drawings. What I love about it, is that you can give the face expression and emotion, which helps to give the artwork a certain meaning and depth. I love it when people start to create stories around the portraits I make!

What new exciting thing is coming next in the world of Juna Biagioni?

I will be teaching online! I am a guest teacher in two fantastic online courses: the Art Journal Summer School, which started on July 1st, and Radiant II, which starts October 1st. I’m so honoured to be part of a great line-up of teachers, in both courses!

And another huge milestone for me is that I am currently developing my own online course on making portraits, called Drawing in the Soul. In this course I will teach how I create my portraits and focus on how I give them expression, emotion and soul. The course is scheduled to start in the fall of this year. People who are interested can find all the information on my website.

Interview with France Papillon – Radiant Art Journals Teacher Interviews

Let me present to you an interview with the wonderful France Papillon!

radiantfrance

Tell us in one sentence what it is you do?

I have fun, telling my story with textures, colors and shapes. Or in more grown up words: I create mixed media art with a focus on art journaling.

What is your favourite colour palette?

It depends on my mood. Often I reach for blues or purple. But it always includes rust. Always!

What is your (current) favourite art supply?

Autumn Leaf Primary elements from ColourArte. It’s like rust in jar!

Your art has such a grungy/shabby feel to it, but you also do more colourful work. Is there a difference for you whether you work with a more muted palette or a colourful one?

Yes, again, it all depends on my mood. But I think, whether it is grungy or colourful, it’s very often very organic. Especially since a couple of months. The result of the influence of life, I guess…

What new exciting thing is coming next in the world of France Papillon?

Interview with Tangie Baxter – Radiant Art Journals Teacher Interviews

Let me present to you an interview with the wonderful Tangie Baxter!

radianttangie

Tell us in one sentence what it is you do?

I am an art facilitator, passionate about art journaling, on a mission to help people discover their birthright, a life full of creativity.

FAVORITE COLOR PALETTE | Tangie Baxter | tangiebaxter.comWhat is your favourite colour palette?

I love vintage color palettes, especially turquoise and red together. (on the right is an image of one of my favorite palettes you can use!)

What is your (current) favourite art supply?

I have always loved (and probably always will) Neocolor II’s from Caran d’Nache. I also love Peerless watercolors.

You are prolific with all your ideas & projects! Please give us an insight into where you get your inspiration from?

I really truly am inspired by everything around me! I know it sounds so cliche’, but it couldn’t be truer. My mind never shuts down…ever. I see art, opportunity and creativity everywhere. I am constantly thinking how I can make things, redo things, teach things and wondering what I can do to encourage people to BELIEVE that they were BORN creative. We are creative beings, and to deny that about oneself makes for a very unhappy soul. Too many people associate “natural talent to draw” as being an artist, that simply isn’t true. A true artist finds a way to express themselves, the finished piece is secondary to the process. I’m very passionate about this and it is constantly on my mind.

What new exciting thing is coming next in the world of Tangie Baxter?

My newest class starts June 24th and is “live” all through July. For the first time ever I’m teaching an online class about my “Junque Journals” I started making these about 10 years ago. I put some videos on YouTube about 5 years ago and it was crazy how fast it spread, everyone was making Junque Journals! It was such a fun thing to watch. Now all these years later, I’m remaking all the tutorials in HD in my Studio. I’ve come a long way since then.

Interview with Nolwenn Petitbois – Radiant Art Journals Teacher Interviews

Let me present to you an interview with the wonderful Nolwenn Petitbois!

radiantnolwenn

Tell us in one sentence what it is you do?

Can it be a long sentence *wink* ? I unfold true and not-always-so-true stories via textured mixed media paintings that usually see characters emerge but not necessarily.

What is your favourite colour palette?

I approach color palette like my food: my favorites come and go but I have a few that always stick around one way or another. And something you might not know about me is that I am a very obsessive artist, once I have found something that works for me, I will use and abuse it over and over again. Right now, I am obsessed with Dick Blick’s Payne’s Gray. Hard to believe but it is like no other Payne’s Gray I have used until now, darker and deeper to the point of almost black. I love it with bright colors like fluorescent pink and with paler one like Titan Buff. But I might tell you something different tomorrow. At the moment, I am also obsessed with the sky and the earth, so raw umber with teal and a bit of white makes me feel like I am in Heaven.

What is your (current) favourite art supply?

Oil pastels. I LOOOOVE art supplies though and as a Mixed Media artist used to use that as an excuse to hoard them. I recently got rid of a ton of it, and set some aside for my daughters to play with, because I noticed that I do not need that much, I guess it comes with a new confidence in the way I use the supplies I love. So yes, currently my favorite are my NeoPastels from Caran d’Ache.

Talk to me about texture! What does texture mean to you?

To me, texture is an unexpected way to add a new level to my visual stories. It is about the depth that makes all the difference when used with acrylic paints and other media. I love when I can close my eyes and caress a painting to see how it fits with what is going on when I do open my eyes.

What new exciting thing is coming next in the world of Nolwenn Petitbois?

I have almost finished preparing for my next solo online class, titled Texture Tales. I am beyond excited about it and can’t wait to launch it soon.

I am also very excited to be amongst other talented artists like Iris, gathered around Effy extraordinaire, in Radiant Faces 2.

I just started a new creative thing called The 100day challenge because I needed something creative to stretch my practice, so it will be an Abstraction Exploration, as I call it. Doing this just for me and sharing via Instagram and probably on my blog regularly. Should be fun !

Interview with Andrea Schroeder – Radiant Art Journals Teacher Interviews

Let me present to you an interview with the wonderful Andrea Schroeder!

radiantandrea

Tell us in one sentence what it is you do?

I help creative people use their creative power to bring their dreams to life (i.e.: to CREATE their lives).

What is your favourite colour palette?

Bright shades of fuchsia, orange and turquoise plus deep dark stormy blue.

What is your (current) favourite art supply?

Oil pastels.

Tell us a bit more about this concept of ‘inner magic’. What does it mean to you and what is your one tip to anyone who’d like to access a bit of their own inner magic?

“Inner Magic” is about being really connected to your inner gifts or soul qualities: purpose, creativity, wisdom, delight.

It’s not magic at all, it’s just what happens when you show up in your life as an awakened and empowered creative being. But, we live in a world that encourages us to look outside instead of inside, so most of us go through our whole lives with our inner gifts mostly un-tapped. Because there is such a dramatic change in what happens in your life when you become connected to your inner gifts, the things that happen in your life really do look and feel “like magic” which is why I use that term.

There is no quick tip for genuinely connecting with your inner magic – you have to be willing to make a big commitment to yourself and your growth before you can even begin the journey. The only tip I can offer is to think about how this power lives inside of you, to stop looking for things outside of you to change and consider what you can do to CREATE change. Consider that your creative gifts are much more expansive than you think they are. Consider that you are more powerful than you know. Consider that your dreams are actually your purpose.

What new exciting thing is coming next in the world of Andrea Schroeder?

Decks of inspiration + journaling cards! For a few years I have been making decks of original art inspiration cards for my clients, but this year I will start selling printed decks of cards.

The first deck is a deck of questions for journaling to help you access more insight + magic in your journaling practice. Many more decks are in process.
