I’m a huge admirer of ByBun (Roxanne Coble)’s work, in particular her mini journals and matchbook journals. They look like such complete works of art, but in tiny cute form. Always up for a challenge I decided to try and make one myself. Thinking back to a bookbinding course I took a decade ago which was absolutely vague in my memory…. Anyway, a lot of hours and 10 mini journals later…..
They’re mega addictive to make! And even more fun to decorate and work in. The ones I’ve made measure approx 2×1.5″ (5×3.5cm) and they have 8 spreads (or 16 pages).
Creating a prototype. The first journal had the most mistakes, but taught me how to do things most effectively and neatly.
After the prototype I made a batch of 6 mini journals. I used scrapbooking papers for covers and gaffer tape for the spine. I’ve since also made ones using a vintage map for the covers!
I started out by decorating all the pages at the same time with my favourite art supplies, that way the whole mini journal has a sense of cohesion. The individual spreads were then finished one at a time over the course of several weeks.
A bunch of my art friends have already got inspired and made their own mini journals! Join us in my Facebook group!
